A Wednesday in Colombo

People ask me all the time what life is like here, and when they ask, honestly, I can't think of anything to say!  There are so many little quirks about Sri Lanka that happen day to day, I can never think of them when asked.  I thought I would just share a day, while it's fresh on my mind.
So here goes...
Anna and I had an appointment at the Embassy (more on that later).  I spent the morning trying to gather my files and get my medical information printed with my printer I bought here, from a company that "negotiated me a good deal" (because everything is negotiable in Sri Lanka and sealed with a head bob)  We went to the embassy, met the Dr. shopped the commissary for luxury items like Nutella and Kraft sliced cheese, oh and we sprang for some capri suns! Then, we had lunch at the cafe at the Embassy.  I had a greek salad that has very little lettuce because lettuce grows in cooler climates - and hello - Sri Lanka.... it was chopped veggies with pepper and oil and a lime to squeeze for dressing.  No salad dressing here.  Forget that ranch - doesn't exist. I'm rambling...
Then it was a walk to the grocery store, did I mention it's hot here? It's real hot, y'all.  We picked up some chicken - they actually had boneless skinless chicken breasts! I bought 3 kilos! They also had fresh milk that didn't expire for 5 days! It was like God was rewarding us today. We jumped in a Tuk Tuk and headed home to START our homeschool day at 1:00pm.  We come in to find our housekeeper telling us the water was out.  YEP 15 hour water outage for Colombo, folks.  In full disclosure, it was only cold water to my kitchen, curry kitchen and dishwasher.  Because the Embassy loves us and gave us reserve tanks for the rest of the house.  So, not a huge problem, just a small one...made bigger by the fact that I reported the dishwasher was broken and the embassy repair man came to fix it only to tell me it was because the water was out... score one for Jenn! #managementfail
Backing up - when we went to figure out why our water wasn't pumping from our reserve tank into the kitchen, we found...a dead rat - gag me! Thank you God for giving Tilaka a strong stomach! She is my hero.  Anyway, fast forward to the embassy maintenance man telling me my dishwasher wasn't broken, just no water...
While he was here, I go into, what we lovingly call the leaky room, because it leaks EVERYTIME IT RAINS, and I see a GIANT cockroach.  I reach for the bug spray and start to shoot him, but as I spray, tons of roaches start climbing out of the box! YUCK! I was over nasty stuff for the day!
Next was the second embassy repair man to fix our sliding screen door. He did it in ten minutes and commented it was an easy fix, which left me wondering why I had let it go for so long...
All in all, I would say the day was really successful - Tiring, surreal, but altogether successful.
Trying to get better about sharing our adventures - until next time,
Jennifer
