In front of Crescat mall, right on Galle Road is a little restaurant named Sugar. It's the perfect "ease you in to Sri Lanka" type restaurant. The menu consists of western foods like burgers, salads, even a quesadilla but they also feature yummy local dishes like lamprais or kottu. My favorite dish is the crab kottu. It's roti (think tortilla shell) chopped finely with veggies like carrots, add some crab and top it with an egg sunny side up and you have yourself crab kottu. It's pretty tasty.
Sugar was one of the first places we ate after moving here, and because of its proximity to Erik's work as well as our home, we continue to go back. The staff are friendly, and the prices are decent. A friend recently shared that the best carrot cake she's ever had was from Sugar. I'd argue she hasn't ever had my mama or my grandma's carrot cake, but hey - it's Sri Lanka and Sugar is pretty good. I'd recommend it if you ever find yourself in Colombo.
